Russia’s recent actions regarding the Kurils recently seem sensible to me. Rebuilding the military to a size and capability to effectively secure borders would include putting some forces in places like the Kurils. Japanese talk of claims to these islands is little more than domestic political grandstanding.

The Treaty of San Francisco has an “out” for Japan. The “Northern Territories” are not, in their view, part of the Kurils. In my view this is a total, steaming pile of BS. But Uncle Sam has been playing this dispute up to make sure that Russia has problems on every inch of its borders.

As far as Japan’s claim to *any* of the Kurils and Hokaido for that matter, these islands were Ainu lands that were *not* in the possession of Japan around 1800 and before. Thanks to the European colonialism frenzy, Russia extended its sovereignty to include all the islands by 1787. Japan waged a war against Russia in 1806-7 focused on southern Sakhalin, it got driven back but grabbed the “Northern Territories”. In 1821 Alexander I recognizes this loss when granting concessions to the Russian-American Company. It becomes consolidated in 1855 when diplomatic relations are established for the first time with Japan. When Russia tried in 1804-5 they were met with hostility.

The US and its NATO pals should put a sock in it when it comes to these islands. When the UK returns the Malvinas back to Argentina and when Germany regains all of its territory before 1914 then maybe there should be some discussion. It is Japan’s fault, without any doubt, for fighting a war of aggression and losing. Japan does not deserve any special treatment.
